UCR Police
The UCR Police are State Police Officers responsible for law enforcement duties on and about the campus. The UCR Police have a direct line to a 24-hour emergency service, which responds to all emergencies, including medical emergencies. For a police or medical emergency you should call 9-1-1. For all non-emergencies, you may call extension 2-5222.
Escort Service
UCR has a volunteer escort service, which we encourage you to use when you walk on campus at night. It is administered by the Women’s Resource Center. If you want to be escorted to any location on campus during the evening hours, call 8-3337. Hours are sundown until midnight, Sunday through Thursday. As volunteer escorts are welcome, you should volunteer to help if you can afford the time.
Identification
All residents are issued a UCR Card and key holder, which serves as your Residence Hall ID. These should be carried with you at all times.
Safety Tips
Unfortunately, crime is everywhere. Protect yourself with these simple crime prevention tips wherever you are:
-
Avoid walking alone at night unless absolutely necessary. Use the Campus Escort Service or ask hall-mates to accompany you.
-
Avoid shortcuts and dark, isolated areas.
-
Walk purposefully, know where you are going.
-
Avoid potentially dangerous situations.
-
Have your door keys ready; carry them in your pocket or hand—not in your purse.
-
Always lock your car—one in five stolen cars is left with keys in the ignition.
-
Lock bikes to racks with hardened-alloy locks and chains, or U-shaped locks. Do not use Kryptonite locks. Use Residence Hall bike storage areas.
-
Do not leave any valuables or property visible inside the car. Lock these items in the trunk.
-
Keep doors and windows locked, especially when you are not in your room.
-
Store valuables out of site in your room (in the personal compartment). For more info, go to this website: www.privacycompartment.com.
-
Be aware of strangers on your hall—notify the Residence Hall Staff of any suspicious persons. No soliciting.
-
If you drink, drink responsibly and stay in control. Most assaults and accidents involve alcohol.
-
Lock mopeds as you would bikes.
-
Look into your car before getting in. Lock doors and roll up windows once inside for protection.
-
Report any safety-related problems to the Residence Hall Staff.
-
Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Security
All buildings are locked 24 hours a day; you will use your UCR Card for entry doors, and a general access key for other Residence Hall facilities. Both should be carried in the provided "Card-Key" holder with the RHA insignia. This card-key holder identifies you as a resident. Each student must take responsibility for keeping doors secured, protecting card/keys from loss, and reporting strangers in the halls to the staff. Do not let people through the entry doors who say they are meeting a friend. Instruct them to contact their friends from the lobby telephone.
When entering the entry doors, make sure anyone else entering the doors has a card-key holder for entry. If you are following a resident through these entry doors, show your card-key holder so that they know you may enter.
Each individual hall entry door is also locked all the time. It is also important for you to keep the door and windows of your room secure at all times. Be sure to deadbolt your door when retiring for the night. Basements and elevators are locked from 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. These areas are secluded and may not be safe during late hours.
Community Service Officers (CSO) from the UCR Police Department assist in keeping all doors closed and transients out of the lounges and hallways. They are on duty during the evening hours, and patrol the parking lots and surrounding grounds, as well.
For your safety we also have an electronic security system on all emergency exit doors that will sound an alarm if these doors are opened. Tampering with or non-emergency use of these doors is grounds for eviction.
For your protection and safety we have security surveillance cameras in many public areas including all elevators and most parking lots. In case of an incident or a theft, the identity of the perpetrator MAY be found on one or more of our surveillance tapes. Please contact your RD if you have any questions.
Parking Gate
At lots 14, 21 and 22, additional security is provided via barrier arm gates which are activated by your UCR Card. If your card is lost or misplaced an emergency button with a live camera is provided at each barrier arm gate. After pushing the emergency button and being properly identified the gate will be remotely opened for you from the RSO. Continually forgetting your UCR card will result in punitive fines. You are allowed 3 free lockouts per year.
Theft
Unfortunately, thefts do occur from time to time. Thefts from rooms almost always take place when the room is left unlocked while the residents are gone (either going to the bathroom, visiting someone on the hall, or going to class). Lock your room whenever you leave—no matter how long you are gone. All thefts should be reported to the UCR Police and the Housing Residence Life staff immediately.
